Hosted by Connected Advocacy in collaboration with Lincgreen Climate Change Initiative, the Media-Community Dialogue on Renewable Energy Democracy took place in February 2025 at Ebis Hotel, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. This significant gathering convened over 30 journalists, community leaders, advocates, and storytellers to strengthen local media reportage on renewable energy access as a key component of a just transition in Nigeria’s extractive sector reforms.
Recognizing the vital role of the media in shaping public perception and influencing policy, the event aimed to build the capacity of local journalists to report effectively on energy reforms, ensuring that the transition to renewable energy is both inclusive and equitable. Participants engaged in insightful discussions on the socio-economic and environmental implications of moving away from fossil fuels, with a focus on empowering vulnerable communities that have long been impacted by oil extraction.
Through expert-led sessions, collaborative networking, and knowledge-sharing, the dialogue fostered partnerships between media professionals, NGOs, and community leaders. It emphasized the need for community-driven storytelling to amplify the voices of those most affected by climate change and energy policies. By equipping journalists with the necessary tools and knowledge, the event reinforced the role of local media as a driving force in advocating for a sustainable and just energy transition in Nigeria.
